As one of the oldest cultural horse breeds on the continent, it began its journey on the rugged yet beautiful Karst Plateau. With its unforgiving nature and demanding terrain, this landscape strengthened their endurance over the centuries. The history of the Lipizzaner reveals that these horses were bred for the most demanding tasks, where strength and agility were essential. It is precisely the hard Karst terrain that shapes their exceptionally strong and healthy hooves. Without this natural pedicure, the breed would not be what we know today. This is a horse that literally grew out of stone.

The early story of the Lipizzaner includes the deliberate importation of Spanish, Barb, and Arabian stallions, which brought elegance, speed, and nobility in the 16th century. However, it was the Karst that gave these genes their final form. Karst herbs, rich in essential oils, and the specific minerals found in the limestone soil play a crucial role in the development of a dense and strong skeletal structure. A horse that grows up on these pastures receives more than just food; it receives a natural infusion of strength. Selection was always strict. Only the best survived the heat and scarcity of grazing during the dry summer months.

The Influence of the Karst Landscape on Character

Karst horses are known for their exceptional intelligence. Life in an environment where powerful gusts of the bora wind, scorching sun, and water scarcity intertwine requires a strong survival instinct. This environment has instilled in the Lipizzaner a temperament that is both spirited and manageable. At JJ-LIPIZZANS in the village of Prešnica, we preserve this tradition with deep respect for natural processes. Our herd lives on more than 100 hectares of pasture in close contact with nature, ensuring the preservation of their natural character and intelligence. We believe that only freedom on the Karst pastures beneath Mount Slavnik allows for the development of that authentic personality that the breed has shaped over centuries.

The Founding of the Lipica Stud Farm (1580)

A key milestone occurred in 1580, when Archduke Charles II purchased the estate in Lipica from Bishop Coret of Trieste with a vision of creating the perfect horse for the Habsburg court. They needed an animal strong enough for military parades and elegant enough for court dances. Lipica became the original studbook for the entire World. This means that every true Lipizzaner in the World carries a piece of this Karst land in its genetic heritage. The global significance of this heritage was also recognized in 2022. The inscription of Lipizzaner breeding traditions on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity confirms that this is a treasure that transcends local boundaries. The authentic story of the Lipizzaner thus continues with every new foal that takes its first steps on the Karst grass.

Lipica Stud Farm is today the oldest continuously operating horse-breeding institution in the World.

Historical Milestones: From Imperial Courts to Survival Through Wars

The story of the Lipizzaner does not read like an ordinary horse-breeding manual, but rather like an epic novel of perseverance. When the first horses left the Karst commons and arrived at the Viennese court, a new chapter in their existence began. They quickly grew beyond the confines of a local breed and became a central part of Habsburg splendor. Over the centuries, these noble creatures became synonymous with the power of the monarchy, and their fate was closely intertwined with the political upheavals at the heart of Europe. Every war that ravaged the continent left its mark on their genetics and population, yet they returned time and again, stronger and more highly valued.

Key Milestones Throughout History:

The Founding of Lipica: In 1564, Emperor Ferdinand I divided the Austrian hereditary lands, which formed the core of the Habsburg Monarchy, among his three sons: Archdukes Maximilian II, Ferdinand, and Charles. Archduke Charles thus ruled Inner Austria, which comprised the lands of Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, and the Austrian territories along the Adriatic.

With the threat of war looming, safeguarding the herd became a top priority. In 1796, as Napoleon’s forces advanced, the entire Lipica Stud Farm was evacuated to Székesfehérvár in Hungary, southwest of Budapest. The relocation was an extraordinary logistical undertaking: a herd of nearly 300 horses made the arduous journey to Hungary over six weeks. Following the peace agreement concluded the next year, preparations began for their return to Lipica. The process was gradual, and it was not until September 1798 that the entire herd had finally returned home.

After several years back home, the herd was once again forced to flee from the advancing French army in 1805. On 15 November, it set out for Đakovo in Slavonia (Croatia) and arrived in early January 1806. In October of that same year, the herd was relocated to Karád in Hungary, before finally returning to Lipica in April 1807.

But not for long—in 1809, during Napoleon’s third advance into the heart of what was then Austria, the Lipica herd was forced into exile for a third time, this time to Pecica in present-day Romania. The journey lasted from 12 May to 27 June 1809, and the herd remained in exile for six long years. The horses did not return to Lipica until 1815.

A century-long golden age of the Lipica Stud Farm followed, until it was brought to an abrupt end by the First World War on 18 May 1915.

Just a few days before the Kingdom of Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, the stud farm management received orders to evacuate. The foundation herd, service horses, and four-year-old mares were transferred to Laxenburg, south of Vienna, while the remaining age groups of mares and all the stallions were moved to the Kladruby Stud Farm in Bohemia.

The end of the First World War also marked the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy and, with it, the end of the Imperial and Royal Court Stud Farm at Lipica. The newly established Czechoslovak Republic confiscated all the horses at Kladruby. Meanwhile, the Republic of Austria and the Kingdom of Italy—which after the war acquired the western part of Slovenian territory, including Lipica—divided the 179 horses from Laxenburg equally between them.

Thus, on 19 July 1919, the contingent of horses allocated to Italy under the agreement arrived in Lipica.

On 9 September 1943, the day after Italy’s capitulation, German forces entered the Lipica Stud Farm. Just one month later, on 10 October 1943, the entire stud farm—comprising all 179 horses—was transferred to Hostouň (Hostau) in Bohemia. Lipizzaners from the Yugoslav state stud farms of Stančić and Krušedol, the Demir Kapija Court Stud Farm in Macedonia, and Austria’s Piber Stud Farm were also transported there, along with Arabian horses from the Yugoslav Dušanovo Stud Farm near Skopje and the Polish Janów Podlaski Stud Farm. The Nazi leadership intended to establish a new centre for Lipizzaner breeding there.

Along with the herd, 14 local horsemen and the stud farm’s original archives were also taken from Lipica. Six of the horsemen soon returned home, while the remaining eight stayed with the horses in exile for four years.

By the spring of 1945, it was clear that the days of the Third Reich were numbered. By mid-April, the U.S. Army had advanced across southern Germany as far as the Czechoslovak border, which, under the agreements reached at the Yalta Conference, the Americans were not permitted to cross.

The valuable horses at Hostouň were in grave danger, as it was clear that they would soon fall into the hands of the Red Army. Experiences from only a few months earlier had been disastrous—the Soviets had used part of a herd of valuable horses from Budapest as draft animals, while others had been eaten. The management of the stud farm decided that something had to be done. An emissary was sent across the border, where he deliberately allowed himself to be captured by the Americans. He carried a collection of documents as well as photographs of the valuable horses in the hope of attracting the attention of American officers.

Colonel Charles Hancock Reed, commander of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of Patton’s Third Army, immediately supported a rescue operation. The simplest solution would have been for the Germans themselves to transport the horses to the American side, but there were too few of them to carry out such an extensive logistical operation. And so, contrary to the provisions of the Yalta agreements, the U.S. Army crossed the Czechoslovak border to rescue the valuable horses and bring them to the West.

Since eastern Austria, including Vienna, was to fall within the Red Army’s occupation zone after the war, the Lipizzaners of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna also had to be saved. On 7 May 1945, the school’s director, Alois Podhajsky, therefore organized a special performance for General Patton and the command of the Third Army in the village of St. Martin in northern Austria. His aim was to demonstrate to the general what the Lipizzaners were capable of and to ask him to place them under his protection, thereby ensuring their safety.

Patton made no secret of his admiration and, at the end of the performance, publicly declared that the United States Army would do everything in its power to protect the Lipizzaners.

The Lipizzaner herd was subsequently relocated several times across Bavaria and Austria. In 1947, the Americans handed over 109 horses, together with the stud farm’s archives and studbooks, to Italy, as Lipica formally remained part of Italy until the border settlement was finalized.

Thus, in December 1947, only 11 horses that had originated directly from Lipica returned to the stud farm. Through persistent and dedicated work, the stud farm gradually rebuilt its herd to more than 350 Lipizzaners.

The Lipica herd was relocated several times throughout history. The experience of just a few months earlier had been catastrophic—the Soviets had used part of a herd of valuable horses from Budapest as draft animals, while others had been eaten. The simplest solution would have been for the Germans themselves to transport the horses to the American side, but there were too few of them to carry out such a large-scale logistical operation.

The solution came from General Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army, who was a cavalry officer by training and also a great lover of horses. “Save them! Do it quickly!” were his words, which became legendary.

And so the U.S. Army—contrary to the provisions of the Yalta Conference—crossed the Czechoslovak border to rescue the noble horses and bring them to the West. The unit of 70 soldiers was supported by two tanks, two self-propelled guns, and other military vehicles. On 18 April 1945, the Americans took control of the stables at Hostouň without major complications.

The rescue operation was threatened by the SS group Deutschland, which refused to accept that the war was lost. The Americans were therefore forced to arm volunteers from among the liberated prisoners of war and surrendered German soldiers, as well as Cossacks who hoped to escape to the West. In the following days, fighting did indeed break out, but this mixed unit succeeded in defending the stables. Two American soldiers, however, lost their lives in the battle.

Preparations for relocating the herd then began. Foals and weaker horses were loaded onto military trucks, while the remaining horses travelled in four columns, departing at half-hour intervals. By the afternoon of 16 May, the last of the horses had safely arrived in the Bavarian town of Kötzting.

Organization The Livestock Conservancy The organization emphasizes that Lipizzaners are one of the horse breeds that were brought to the very brink of extinction by the horrors of war. The legendary Operation Cowboy, authorized by U.S. General George S. Patton, enabled the herd to make a safe passage back to the West. In a daring operation, American forces rescued several hundred horses, making the post-war recovery of the breed possible. Walt Disney Studios later made a film about this famous rescue of the horses, entitled “Miracle of the White Stallions.”

Today, the Lipizzaner represents not only the past but has also become a symbol of Slovenian national consciousness and an indomitable spirit. Its ability to survive through the darkest periods of human history bears witness to the extraordinary vitality instilled in the horse by the Karst. It was here that demanding airs above the ground, such as the levade and capriole, were developed. These movements initially served military purposes but later became the pinnacle of courtly entertainment. The elegance of these white stallions captivated European nobility, as they embodied the ideal of the Baroque horse: powerful, yet exceptionally responsive and intelligent. They were used for the most important ceremonies and court parades, as well as prestigious gifts exchanged between rulers. These periods of glory cemented the breed’s reputation as a horse capable of the highest level of cooperation with humans.

Unique Characteristics: Why Is the Lipizzaner Born Black and Turns White?

The story of the Lipizzaner truly begins in darkness. Almost all foals of this noble breed come into the world with a dark coat, which may be black, brown, or grey. The snow-white colour for which they have become famous around the world is the result of a gradual genetic greying process that usually takes between six and ten years. This transformation is something almost magical in the natural world. It reflects the journey from a playful, dark-coated foal to a magnificent white stallion whose appearance is truly breathtaking.

A few rare individuals retain their dark colour throughout their lives, something that has long been regarded at stud farms as a special blessing and a symbol of good fortune. This genetic characteristic is not merely aesthetic but also bears witness to the breed’s exceptional vitality. Lipizzaners are renowned for their longevity and fertility, with many breeding horses remaining active and healthy well into their twenties.

Their physical build is harmonious and powerful. The Lipizzaner has a distinctive, high-set and arched neck, giving it a regal appearance at first glance. Its legs are lean, with strong joints and sturdy hooves, enabling the characteristic high-stepping action admired in classical dressage. Every movement is deliberate and elegant, the result of centuries of careful selective breeding on the hard Karst terrain.

The Six Classical Stallion Lines: Pillars of the Breed

Breeding is based on a strict tradition defined by six classical stallion bloodlines: Pluto, Conversano, Maestoso, Favory, Neapolitano, and Siglavy. Each of these bloodlines contributes specific characteristics, ranging from Baroque strength to Arabian elegance, reflected in the noble head and large, expressive eyes. Preserving these bloodlines is essential to maintaining the authenticity of the breed.

At JJ-LIPIZZANS, we are fully aware of the responsibility that comes with safeguarding this heritage. Our own breeding station, with licensed stallions, ensures that these noble bloodlines are passed on to new generations in accordance with the highest standards. This dedication has been recognized worldwide, as the tradition of Lipizzaner breeding has been inscribed on the UNESCO list as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Character: Nobility and Intelligence

The Lipizzaner is not merely a horse; it is a partner with an exceptional memory. It is said that a Lipizzaner remembers everything: every act of kindness and every instance of mistreatment. Its intelligence enables it to understand commands more quickly than most other breeds, making it an ideal “student.”

In Slovenia, we breed the classical type of Lipizzaner, just as our ancestors knew it. This harmonious conformation allows the horse to perform the most demanding elements of classical dressage with natural ease. Its greatest virtue, however, remains the high degree of trust it places in people who treat it with respect. It is precisely this combination of physical strength and a sharp mind that the story of the Lipizzaner highlights as the greatest value of this ancient breed.

Modern Breeding: The Importance of Free Grazing and a Sustainable Approach

The modern story of the Lipizzaner no longer unfolds solely behind the thick walls of Baroque stables, but across the vast Karst commons, where tradition meets a sustainable future. Although historical sources often emphasize only the importance of state stud farms, today high-quality breeding is also successfully developing in privately owned, professionally managed environments committed to sustainable development.

We believe that the nobility of the horse is best preserved where the breed was born: in direct contact with nature. This return to its original way of life allows the horses to develop their full physical and mental strength without the unnecessary stress associated with being kept in stalls.

to en: Free grazing is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a necessity for the healthy development of the animals. Movement across varied, rugged terrain naturally strengthens the cardiovascular system and skeleton, while constant exposure to clean air directly contributes to the development of strong, efficient lungs. A horse raised outdoors develops a significantly stronger immune system, which in the long term means fewer health problems and greater vitality in adulthood.

Socialization within the herd is the key element that helps shape a stable and well-balanced temperament. Through play and the natural hierarchy of the group, young horses learn respect and communication, laying the foundation for the trust they will later develop with humans.

Sustainable Breeding at JJ-LIPIZZANS

In the village of Prešnica, we have created an environment where Lipizzaners live in complete harmony with natural cycles. The firm, rugged terrain naturally strengthens the horses’ hooves, while mineral-rich herbs provide valuable nutrients. At JJ-LIPIZZANS, our horses roam freely across more than 100 hectares of open pasture, encouraging healthy lung development, a strong immune system, and overall physical resilience.

Living freely within a herd also plays an essential role in developing a balanced temperament and strong social skills—qualities that can be more difficult to nurture in horses kept primarily in stalls. This natural approach to breeding helps our Lipizzaners grow into healthy, resilient, and well-balanced horses.

Does JJ-LIPIZZANS Arrange International Horse Transport?

Yes. For every horse purchased from us, we professionally arrange international transport to destinations worldwide. Our experienced team handles all the necessary documentation, veterinary certificates, and logistics to ensure a safe and smooth journey.

We understand that travelling can be stressful for a horse, which is why we work exclusively with trusted and experienced transport providers. Our goal is to ensure that your new Lipizzaner arrives at its new home safely, in the best possible condition, and without unnecessary complications.

What Are the Six Foundation Stallion Lines of the Lipizzaner Breed?

The six classical stallion lines at the heart of modern Lipizzaner breeding are Pluto, Conversano, Maestoso, Favory, Neapolitano, and Siglavy. Each traces its lineage to a distinguished foundation stallion of the 18th or 19th century, whose legacy enriched the breed with defining qualities ranging from powerful Baroque conformation to the refinement and elegance of Arabian ancestry.

Preserving these historic bloodlines is essential to safeguarding the authenticity, genetic diversity, and centuries-old heritage of the Lipizzaner. At our farm in Prešnica, we honour this legacy through careful selection and the use of licensed stallions, ensuring that the noble qualities passed down through generations continue to flourish. In this way, the remarkable story of the Lipizzaner lives on in every new generation.

Explore the World of the Lipizzaner HERE .

Source: Government Communication Office of the Republic of Slovenia.

The history of the Lipizzaner and its survival through centuries of war, from the breed's origins to its inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

[301
