Explore Karst and Brkini

More than a decade has passed since I moved from the capital city of Ljubljana and concrete, to our karst village Prešnica. Prešnica lies at the junction of the Karst, Brkini and Čičarija. A beautiful mixture of typical karst construction, landscape and caves. It is adorned by a water spring, and on the other side by land that has provided food for the villagers over the centuries. The vegetation is full of aromatic plants, as the village faces the sea and the influence of the Mediterranean climate can be felt.

How to describe the mystical karst world? It is hard and resistant like karst stone, which has been an important building segment in this part of the world for centuries. Water and stone (limestone is soluble in water) have created karst phenomena throughout history - caves, sinkholes, bays, valleys and more. The white stone is associated with white horses - LIPIZZANERS.The red karst soil (terra rossa) creates the red teran wine. Did you know that the same vine tree in the other part of Slovenia bears fruit and produces Refošk wine? TERAN is unique precisely because of the red soil and the minerals in it. Taste it in the embrace of a Karst homestead with accommodation with family Lisjak. There you can feel the love for the Karst, the land and history.

And BORA WIND, this gusty wind that is felt more in winter. Locals say brings good weather and health. Bora wind is also essential in the natural way of drying meat, including the well-known PROSCIUTTO.Bora wind can easily exceed 100 km/h in gusts, which is precisely why karst houses have a special construction.

The first thing a visitor notices in the Karst are the dry stone walls that demarcate the cultivated land and fence the pastures. The karst house impresses with its original architectural elements, with an enclosed courtyard, a borjac, and a characteristic entrance, the kalona. Stone carving is a craft honed to the point of mastery, which is preserved today by stonemasons. Not only because of the usefulness of stone objects, karst stone is also an inexhaustible inspiration for artistic creation.
